SHIELD connects high school students with junior firefighter programs, volunteer EMS organizations, police cadet programs, and more — safe, structured opportunities to serve your community and build real experience before you even graduate.
The Problem We Solve
Emergency services across the country are facing volunteer shortages — while the students who could fill those ranks don't even know the door is open to them.
Most high schoolers have never heard of junior firefighter programs, youth EMS memberships, or police cadet programs. They assume emergency services are for adults only — or that volunteering would put them in danger. Neither is true.
Fire departments, EMS squads, and police departments want young recruits — but between calls, training, and running their stations, they have no time and no school connections to organize outreach. That's where SHIELD steps in.
What We Do
SHIELD works behind the scenes so departments can focus on serving their communities and students can focus on getting involved.
We reach out to school districts on a department's behalf and schedule recruiting visits — think of how military recruiters set up at lunch. We handle the logistics; the department just shows up and connects with students.
Many schools teach a CPR unit in health class. We coordinate visits from real firefighters and EMTs who show students how CPR is used in the field — making the lesson real and putting a face on local emergency services.
SHIELD chapters are run by students who promote these volunteer opportunities in their own schools and communities — and help interested classmates find the closest department or organization to join.
Why It Matters
Worried About Safety?
The most common reason students (and parents) hesitate is the fear of being put in harm's way. In reality, junior programs are built around strict safeguards:
Whether you're a student, a school, or a department — SHIELD is free, and getting started takes minutes.
