SHIELD works with many departments, so we don't point students at any single one. Instead, tell us where you are and what interests you — and we'll help you find the closest fire department, EMS squad, or cadet program that accepts junior members.
We only use this information to match you with nearby programs. We never share it with anyone other than the department you choose to connect with, and we never charge for this — it's free, always.

You don't have to wait for us — here's exactly how to track down youth opportunities in your own community.
Try searching your town's name with "junior firefighter," "volunteer EMS," "cadet program," or "explorer post." Most departments list youth programs on their website or social media pages.
Seriously — stations welcome visitors. Stop by your local firehouse or squad building (bring a parent if you like) and ask if they have a junior or youth program. If they don't, they'll usually know who nearby does.
Guidance counselors, health teachers, and SROs (school resource officers) often know about local cadet and junior programs — and some schools already have connections through SHIELD.
Compare junior firefighting, volunteer EMS, and cadet programs — and see what each one is really like.
